The GT1R Carbon Front and Rear Brake kits should be installed by professional mechanics only and does require special tools and equipment.
*The rear rotor locators are meant to be used with ARP extended wheel studs. The lug centering shims will not seat correctly on factory studs.
To begin installation of the rear brake kit note that all of the components on both sides are the same with the exception of the new caliper mounting bracket.
For both front and rear installation to begin the uprights should be stripped of existing brake components and wheel bearings. The front wheel speed sensor should be removed before the front wheel bearing, otherwise it will be damaged or broken. Do not discard the stock wheel bearings or four stock wheel bearing bolts as they will be reused.
The caliper mounting bracket also takes the place of the dust shield and is side specific. When installed the caliper mounting bracket will locate the caliper on the rear side with the two yellow zinc coated steel inserts in the rear as pictured below:
You will now need to reinstall the factory wheel bearing and the two provided caliper bracket bolts. Do not tighten any bolts until all four factory wheel bearing bolts and two new bolts have been run installed. The longer of the two provided bolts is located on the top of the bracket. You may now torque the factory wheel bearing bolts to factory spec (65ft.lbs). Torque the two new bracket bolts to 45ft.lbs. With the wheel bearing and bracket torqued down, install the new carbon rotor. With each rotor there are five locators to be installed around the wheel stud and in the rotor as seen in the picture below. Make note, one side of these locators has a taper, that side goes toward the hub, and locates at the base of the ARP wheel stud.
With the rotor installed the caliper can now be installed with the two provided zinc plated bolts (35ft.lbs).
The brake pads should be installed on the center caliper sleeve and then installed in the caliper (10ft.lbs).
The next step is adapting the provided brake lines (rear uses the hose with two straight hose ends) to the factory hard brake lines at the factory mounting bracket. After removing the factory brake line (post mounting bracket) thoroughly clean the area and the end of the factory line.
Mount the brake fitting adapter and factory retaining clip. Secure the adapter using a 11/16 wrench and tighten the brake line using a 10mm brake line fitting wrench.
Route the line as shown below and tighten the brake line on the caliper fitting.
Rear installation is now complete.
All components between the two front brake kits are the same.
As previously mentioned, the wheel bearing should be removed to begin installation:
The front upright will need to be clearanced to fit both the new calipers and caliper brackets. An example of a clearanced upright and a stock upright can be seen below:
Check clearancing with both the bracket and the caliper before moving forward.
With the upright clearanced the caliper mounting bracket may be installed, with the bolts hand tight.
The next step is reinstalling the wheel bearing. Please note that the wheel bearing needs to be clocked correctly for the wheel speed sensor to function properly.
The same 65ft.lbs is used on the front wheel bearing bolts.
The provided 90* fittings should be installed on the front calipers before final install. Teflon tape should be used on the threads. On the vehicle these fittings should be oriented as seen below:
The rotor can now be placed on the upright and the caliper installed just as it was on the rear.
Installing and routing the brake line as seen below is the final step before bleeding the system.
Do not torque the caliper bracket bolts until after bleeding the brakes, leave them hand tight for bleeding. Once bled, with someone holding the brake pedal down lightly to apply the brakes, loosen all 3 bolts, then torque them as specified below. This will allow the caliper to center perfectly on the rotor.
The caliper bracket torque is 75ft.lbs for the two large caliper bracket bolts and 25ft.lbs for the small center bolt on the bracket. **NOTE - use washers under the head of the allen bolts, washers are not pictured in the images below**
- Carbon rotors and pads should be handled with extreme caution. These components are easily contaminated by fluids, keep ALL fluids and cleaning agents away from these parts.
- DOT 4 or 5.1 fluid only
- Bleed caliper from the upper bleed valve
- A 3mm wheel spacer has been provided for the rear. This may be needed depending on what rear wheels you are using. Some three piece wheels have hardware that extends through far enough to contact caliper. Check before test driving vehicle.
